Chinese New Year - 3rd February

This year, Chinese New Year occured on the 3rd February. It is the year of the Rabbit. Chinese New Year is the most important date in the Chinese calendar and people take time from work to celebrate and get together with their family.

With a comprehensive range of Chinese products, from sticky sauces to make great appetisers and key ingredients to enable you to cook from scratch, Blue Dragon provides everything you need to create your own Chinese New Year feast at home.

The date of Chinese New Year depends on the Chinese Calendar which is guided by the Lunar months. Chinese New Year is also known as the Spring festival, and is celebrated for 15 days. Throughout the festival, different days have specific activities, for example, the Lantern Festival falls on the 15th day when the moon is full. The lanterns have riddles attached to them and people eat round dumplings called Yuan Xiao which are made of glutinous rice and red bean paste. The round shape of the sweets is important, it represents union and it is the first time of the year that the moon is round.

Tips on how to use up your pumpkin

Halloween is an annual holiday celebrated on October 31. It has roots in the Celtic festival of Samhain and the Christian holy day of All Saints. The festival of Samhain is a celebration of the end of the harvest season in Gaelic culture. Samhain was a time used by the ancient pagans to take stock of supplies and prepare for winter. The ancient Gaels believed that on October 31, the boundaries between the worlds of the living and the dead overlapped and the deceased would come back to life and cause havoc such as sickness or damaged crops.
Traditionally glowing jack-o-lanterns were set on porches and in windows to welcome deceased loved ones, but also to act as protection against malevolent spirits. Should you be looking for fresh ways to use the flesh of your jack-o-lantern why not try our recipe of the month Spicy Squash and Yam Soup!

The traditional food of this festival is the mooncake, of which there are many different varieties. Also foods for a Chinese Mid-Autumn feast are red — for good luck. Japanese Food

Japan has always captured the imagination of many, as much for it's futuristic outlook on living and life as well as its fresh and appealing food. Its cuisine is truly varied - please believe us when we say Japan has a lot more to offer than just raw fish!

Most of us will have come across sushi (usually raw fish and seasoned rice) and sashimi (elegant slices of raw fish) in its various guises. You may well have bought a bento box holding sushi maki (sushi rolled in nori seaweed and sliced), sushi nigiri (hand formed seasoned rice with a usually fish topping), sushi gunkan (lozenges of seasoned sushi rice wrapped in nori and topped usually with raw fish or fish eggs) or many other types of sushi in the supermarket. Sushi has become so popular around the world that other countries have started experimenting and creations such as the California roll - sushi filled with avocado, crab stick and cucumber - are now as popular as some of the most traditional sushi.

But sushi is just the tip of the iceberg! Japan has a long tradition of regional cuisine and dishes that are far too extensive to dwell on here. However there are a few dishes that have proved popular with local and foreign palettes alike, and can be sampled in Japanese restaurants on UK soil. In almost all Japanese restaurants you will be offered a variation on the traditional miso soup, traditionally made with miso paste (a product made through the fermentation of rice and/or soy or barley with salt and the fungus kojikin) and dashi (a light fish stock). You will also more often than not be offered rice with your food as this is the main staple of Japan. They favour the short grain 'Japonica' or sushi variety. It is then that many run into problems as the myriad of dishes on offer make choosing one hard! Why then, not order a selection... the crispy familiarity of katsu curry - chicken or pork, lightly fried in crispy panko breadcrumbs, topped with a light curry sauce and served on rice - is a firm favourite. Or why not try some Japanese noodles dishes? Yakisoba - buckwheat noodles stir fried usually with a mixture of prawns, chicken, mixed vegetables and eggs - is a delicious filling meal. Soups and stews prove a popular choice too, with broths accentuated with tender meat, vegetables and noodles (such as the thick and slurpy udon) and stews like the richly flavoured beef and noodles stew, Sukiyaki.

Tips on an Asian style BBQ

Make some yummy Oriental side dishes to compliment your BBQ - try Sichuan noodles - make a dressing with 2 tbsp of each balsamic vinegar, Chinese chilli oil, caster sugar and 1 tbsp sesame oil and Dark soy sauce, mix well, and toss through cooked egg noodles with toasted sesame seeds and sliced spring onions - add chopped chillies for a bit of fire!

A spicy take on a potato salad - try adding English mustard powder, Dark soy sauce and a small dash of sesame oil to the mayonnaise dressing, and tossing it through boiled new potatoes with sliced coriander, spring onion and chopped red and yellow peppers.

Try this simple BBQ marinade for chicken thighs - place finely chopped garlic and ginger in a freezer bag with soy sauce, shaoxing wine and chopped spring onions. Marinate the thighs in the bag overnight and then cook carefully over the flames until they are well done and tender. Yum!

Tips for an Oriental style Christmas

Make an Oriental inspired flavoured butter to place under the skin of your turkey using chopped lemongrass, coriander, garlic, chilli and spring onion and glaze the skin with Blue Dragon Dark Soy sauce to make it crispy. Also place 2 halves of a lime in the cavity for extra aromatic flavour.

Why not use the traditional accompanying Christmas vegetables, but cook them in a completely different way? Finely shred your carrots and sprouts, and then stir fry over a high heat adding green beans and mange tout and baby sweetcorn. Finally add a glug of sweet chilli sauce and a dash of soy sauce and serve with your Oriental flavoured Turkey.

Why not treat your guests to champagne and Oriental nibbles - try making prawn toast, Chinese spring and Vietnamese summer rolls and chicken and beef satay...
