Five Spice Powder
A traditional Chinese spice blend made from (it is said) five tradional flavours based on the proper yin-yang balance of flavours and exemplified the five basic flavours in Chinese cooking (sweet, sour, bitter, hot and salty). Star anise, cinnamon/cassia bark, fennel seeds, Sichuan peppercorns and cloves are these flavours. However other flavours are often added by manufacturers, for example, corinader seeds, dried orange peel, ginger and cardamom. It is traditionally used with red meat (usually pork).
